REFERENCING IN REPORTS OF RESEARCH: discussion chaired by Janice Bennetts. The conclusions reached were as follows:
1. The list of sources at the end of the research entry form should be called ‘References’ rather than ‘Bibliography’.
2. If you have two documents by an author dating in the same year, they are distinguished by ‘Smith 1920A, p.00’ and ‘Smith 1920B, p.00 or if the months are known ‘Smith 1920 May, p. 00’ and Smith 1920 October, p.00’.
3. If a MS document survives in two (or more) copies, give the reference of the copy you have consulted.
4. For a document held at HRO: If the source is a published document held at HRO, it is acceptable to use the author’s name in the chronology and gazetteer entry. However, in the references, it must be cross-referenced to the HRO number e.g. document by Maberley chronology and gazetteer entry - Maberley 1920, p.00 –; in the Reference entry: HRO 25M63/1 Maberley 1920.
5. Electronic sources: again, copy and paste full web address in the References section, and abbreviate (by initials, for instance) in the text.
6. Name of designer and date designs if known: This is useful for entering on the parks and gardens database.
